What Is The Job Of An Interpreter?

Often, the role of the interpreter is not as well-known as that of the translator, and their tasks are confused. There are a large number of people who, upon hearing the word performer, immediately associate it with the theater. Therefore, in this post, we will review what the interpreter’s functions are and what he does.

What Does An Interpreter Do?

In general terms, the interpreter is responsible for orally translating the message of one or more interlocutors who speak a language other than that of the listeners. In this way, there is communication between people who do not share the same language.

What Is The Difference Between A Translator And An Interpreter?

There are several differences between translation and interpretation. The most obvious is the difference in the medium, since the translator works in the written medium and the interpreter in the oral medium. There are several modes of interpretation. We can find various forms of interpretation since there are various types of communication. Thus, we can find:

Consecutive Interpretation

The interpreter is responsible for reproducing the message from language A to language B. It usually occurs in courses or conferences, where there are a large number of listeners. The speaker narrates his message, and the interpreter, once it has finished, repeats it for the listeners.

Simultaneous Interpretation

This is probably the most complex type of interpretation, since while the interlocutor speaks, the interpreter translates it orally at the moment, like in Thai translation (รับ แปล ภาษา ไทย, which is the term in Thai), without the possibility of consultation and in real-time. It is the interpretation that is carried out, for example, in television programs when a guest does not speak the language of the country in which it is organized.

Liaison Interpretation

In this case, the interpreter transmits the message both from language A to B and vice versa. For example, at a business lunch between a group of French and another of Spanish, one or more interpreters will be in charge of interpreting both Spanish into French and French into Spanish, so that people in business can communicate in real-time.
